Christian Duc, born Ngo Quang Duc in Vietnam in 1947, is a highly prolific designer known for his innovative and functional creations, such as the Orwell cubic armchair (1980) and the Big Pouf coffee table, which doubles as a seat. His work reflects a modern, inventive spirit.
Duc moved from Vietnam to Pennsylvania as a child, and later to the Drôme in France. He studied literature at the University of Paris VIII and design in Berlin. His designs quickly gained recognition, with pieces exhibited in museums like Cooper-Hewitt in New York and the Arts Décoratifs in Paris and Oslo. He received several prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix de la Critique in 1989 and the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris in 1990.
A trip to Vietnam gave a fresh direction to his work, inspiring him to integrate elements of Vietnamese culture and craftsmanship. He showcased these influences in exhibitions at Le Bon Marché and Galeries Lafayette, further establishing his unique blend of tradition and modern design.
